Why is This Happening?

Beginning on July 1, 2022, and in the following weeks, mobile carriers in the USA will permanently shut down their 3G networks. Your current smartphone does not support the 4G Voice over LTE network that the USA will be using going forward.

We expect that the entire 3G network in the USA will permanently shut down in the weeks following July 1, 2022.

Please note, if you purchase a SIM card while in the USA, this SIM card will not allow for voice services with your current model of smartphone.

For an undetermined amount of time, your device may still connect to the T-Mobile 2G network for voice calls, though network coverage and capacity are unknown, and the experience may not provide the quality you expect.

Additional Information

What is VoLTE (Voice over Long-Term Evolution) Roaming?

When travelling in the USA you are able to connect to the internet and make and receive mobile voice calls by accessing the mobile wireless networks of the USA service providers. This is referred to as “roaming”. VoLTE Roaming brings an improved call quality, faster call setup times, and allows the use of LTE voice and data at the same time, all while roaming on another network.

Who will be impacted by these network shutdowns?

If you’re visiting the USA with a mobile device that only supports 3G/HSPA networks, you will not be able to use voice services, connect to the Internet, or use mobile data services on AT&T and T-Mobile networks once their 3G network services are discontinued. One Communications subscribers who have a 4G LTE device that supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE) roaming will not be affected by this change.

Those with an affected device will no longer be able to make or receive wireless calls (including 911 calls), send or receive text messages, or use cellular data while in the USA (including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands).

If you are planning to travel to the USA after July 1st, make sure to upgrade your device prior to your trip.

Will these shutdowns affect my service in Bermuda?

No, there will be no impact on the service in Bermuda, you will still be able to use your handset and enjoy all your services as normal.

How do I know if I am going to be affected by these shutdowns when I travel to the USA? Is my handset ready for VoLTE Roaming?

If your device was purchased directly from One Communications, the following models are compatible with VoLTE and we can guarantee their behaviour:

  • iPhone 8 or newer
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 (Version B), Samsung Galaxy S20+ (Version B), Galaxy S20 Ultra (Version B), Galaxy S20 FE (Version B), Galaxy S21 (Version B), Galaxy S21 Plus (Version B), Galaxy S21 Ultra (Version B), Galaxy S22 Ultra (Version E and U1), Galaxy S22 Plus, Galaxy S22, A20 (Version M), A22 (Version M), A72 (Version M)
  • We will continue to update this list as vendors enable VoLTE on more handsets.

If your device was purchased from another carrier, iPhone 8 or newer are compatible.  iPhone 7s or older are not compatible with VoLTE. The compatibility of all other phones purchased from other carriers is unknown at this time. If your device/model isn’t listed above or it wasn’t purchased directly from One Communications, please check your device’s settings, or contact your device manufacturer. Your handset might work, but we cannot guarantee its behaviour.

Provided you have a compatible device, wireless services will continue to be available on the USA carriers 4G LTE and 5G networks when roaming in the USA.

Based on my device type, what services will be impacted by the discontinuation of the USA 3G network services and what should I do?

3G/HPSA Only Devices:
Voice (including emergency calls to 911) and data services will no longer be supported on AT&T. Data services will no longer work on T-Mobile after they discontinue their 3G/HSPA network services. However, for a limited period, voice services might work in certain areas of the USA on T-Mobile’s 2G network. You will still be able to connect to WiFi and use your phone’s WiFi capabilities.

4G LTE (without VoLTE roaming capability)
Voice services (including emergency calls to 911) will be supported on AT&T. On T-Mobile, voice services might work in certain areas of the USA, on their 2G network, after they discontinue their 3G/HSPA network services. Your data services will continue to be unaffected if your phone supports 4G LTE (Roaming charges apply). You will still be able to connect to WiFi and use your phone’s WiFi capabilities.

4G LTE (with VoLTE roaming capability)
There will be no impact on voice and data services when in 4G LTE network coverage on AT&T and T-Mobile. (Roaming charges apply).

Your handset is fully equipped to roam in the USA, there are no extra steps to be taken. Just make sure that VoLTE services are enabled on your phone and roaming data is turned On.

Will I be able to use voice service in the U.S. if I purchase a local U.S. SIM card?

With your current device you will not be able to use voice services even with a U.S. SIM card. In order to get service in the U.S. you will need to upgrade to a 4G VoLTE Roaming capable phone or use the One Communications app for making calls in the USA.

I do not plan to use my phone while travelling in the U.S. Do I need to do anything?

If you are certain that you will not be using your device in the U.S., no action is needed. However, it’s important to remember that you will not be able to make or receive calls (including 911 calls), send or receive text messages in the U.S. starting from July 2022.
